What Can I Do To Help Hold The Adjustment?
It’s been a couple of weeks of being out of routine and enjoying a break from the day-to-day demands, but now it’s time to get back into rhythm and you realize it’s been a while since your last visit to your chiropractor.
If you’re like many, being out of rhythm motivates you to get back into the healthier choices and routine that promotes more well-being, and you’re ready for a fresh start.
Maybe you’re wondering how or what you could do to help hold the adjustments longer?
For those who see the value in regular chiropractic care, you realize the better the adjustment, the longer the results can last.
For those who are new to chiropractic, “holding the adjustment” could be a brand-new term you’ve never heard before, and you need more clarity.
If you look at the definition of “hold,” several are fitting for the description as it relates to chiropractic:
-
Keep or detain.
-
Remain secure, intact, or in position without breaking or giving way.
-
Contain or be capable of containing.
Holding the Adjustment
Holding the adjustment, by definition, could be the following:
“Holding the adjustment is remaining intact or in position without breaking or giving way to either the ability to adapt to stress or contain or be capable of containing your current state of condition.”
In other words, holding the adjustment means that the positive changes that took place with your last chiropractic adjustment are still holding in that specific location of the spine.
Let’s go back to the basics—supply and demand is a principle of healing that takes place within the body. Supply equals all things working well within, while demand equals all the demands and stress your body is constantly adapting to.
When the demands outweigh the ability to adapt, supply is down, and vertebral subluxation has a perfect environment to develop within the spine.
When vertebral subluxation develops, the principle of supply and demand gets triggered, or healing goes into effect, and the body’s innate intelligence attempts to self-correct the negative physiological condition that is present.
Vertebral subluxation interferes with the function of the neurological system and creates a state of irritability.
How Chiropractic Adjustments Help
Irritability or disturbance to normal function is what your chiropractor can locate and analyze with their educated palpation. Their palpation can discern the difference between normal and dysfunctional neurodynamics.
When the analysis points to the exact listing for vertebral subluxation, that signifies that the body’s self-correction or healing was out of balance within the supply and demand and was unable to self-correct, and a chiropractic adjustment is necessary to introduce a force.
After the chiropractic adjustment is facilitated, supply and demand at that segment of neurodynamics is balanced.
Position and kinetic articulations within the spinal joint are functioning better, and the surrounding tissue communicates that to your chiropractor’s educated palpation.
After the adjustment, you walk out of your chiropractic visit in a better state of condition and position.
Fast forward a week or two of normal day-to-day stress and demands and you’re back at your chiropractor’s getting your spine evaluated for vertebral subluxation, and your chiropractor states,
“You’re holding your last adjustment well.”
Recap: What Does “Holding the Adjustment” Mean?
As a recap, holding the adjustment means the following:
-
You do not require the same chiropractic adjustment on that specific segment as you did on your last visit.
-
You went from the last visit to the current visit without that same disturbance or irritability to the neurodynamics at that specific segment within the spine.
-
Your connective tissue and muscles didn’t resort back to the same position they were fixated at on the last visit.
Holding the chiropractic adjustment is the name of the game and can be influenced with the following in mind:
Consistency and Continuous Care are key when it comes to what you can do to help hold the adjustments longer.
If you walked into the orthodontist office, you wouldn’t expect to just wear your braces for a short time or inconsistently and expect great results. You consistently wear them with repetitive modifications made in the tension of the braces for the desired position.
Similarly, with consistent and continuous chiropractic adjustments, the desired position and kinetic articulations can be achieved.
Regular chiropractic adjustments allow repetitive reinforcement on the ligaments, muscles, and even the structure of bones around the spinal cord and nerve roots to help reinforce normal position.
This repetition is similar to constantly wearing braces with modifications to help create less severe vertebral subluxation and better spinal alignment, position, and overall functionality. In other words, holding the adjustment!
