The Battle Between Invasive Forces and Resistive Forces: A Chiropractic Perspective

Chiropractors have been educating their communities for over one hundred years on the principle of well-being that how you function is related to a state of wholeness.

Disease, physical, or mental weakness is present when function or well-being is absent. Well-being or overall function of the body is the entity that correlates to your quality of life.

The Chiropractic Viewpoint on Health and Well-Being

The Chiropractic viewpoint on health and well-being is that life is a constant battle of universal invasive forces vs. innate resistive forces for the ability to function in a state of efficiency. The innate resistive forces are driving towards a state of wholeness or higher quality of life, and the invasive forces are constantly trying to break down the organization and harmony into a state of disorganization and dysfunction.

Invasive Forces

The invasive forces would be anything on the outside trying to get in and attack our harmony, or anything breaking down on the inside of us creating weakness in our body armor and harmful damage from a lack of normal resistance.

Resistive Forces

The resistive forces are our body’s defense mechanisms against stress that can turn a healthy functioning cell or tissue into an opportunity for apoptosis—cellular death to occur so the battle may be lost, but the war isn’t over.

This biological battle of invasive forces vs. resistive forces takes place 24/7/365 days out of the year. Most of the time without our awareness of it happening.

Gains and Losses: Measuring the Battle

The battle of invasive vs. resistive could philosophically be measured in gains and losses.

  • Gains would be when the resistive forces outnumber or weigh greater in force against the invasive forces.

  • Losses would be when the invasive forces outnumber or weigh greater in force against the resistive forces.

These gains and losses are hypothetical, but the logic behind this theory of how your body is adapting to life’s stressors gives you an approach to reinvesting back into yourself from that which has been taken away.

Why Not Use Current Health Indicators?

You might be asking yourself right now, why not just use the current health indicators that are out there to measure your quality of life? That’s a great question, and you could. There are current health indicators, but from the Chiropractic viewpoint, those indicators are measuring disease, physical or mental weaknesses. These indicators in the Chiropractic viewpoint are signs of an absence of wholeness, well-being, or overall function. They’re the non-entity.

For example, if you look up “health indicators” online, you might find a common list in the following:

  • Obesity

  • Arthritis

  • Diabetes

  • Asthma

  • High blood pressure

These indicators are important for both the study of pathophysiology and healthcare policy for a given population. But, these indicators do not necessarily correlate to your quality of life in terms of adaptational success.

Survival Values and Adaptational Success

Survival values, as they relate to the Chiropractic viewpoint, are terms and philosophical units to measure adaptational success. Succeeding at adapting to life’s stressors gives you a strategy to break down the complex biological processes and find simple steps to improving the expression of an optimal state of well-being. It’s a strategy for improvement. Getting stronger, per se.

As we become more aware of emotional, chemical, and physical stressors, we want to find ways to increase our ability to adapt to them rather than compensate for them.

Stress is constantly confronting our ability to function in its normal state, and due to the negative consequences stress can cause on the body’s physiology, understanding how to adapt to it rather than compensate for it is vital for your ability to thrive at your peak potential.

Approaching Stress: Adapt or Compensate

When it comes to stress, you have two options to approach the harmful effects:

  • Lower the amount of stress.

  • Increase your resistance to stress.

Chiropractic adjustments are one way to increase your resistance to stress from the inside-out. As you increase your resistance to stress, you allow the inborn recuperative powers of well-being to be expressed.
