Why Specificity in Chiropractic Matters
“Chiropractic is specific or it is nothing!”
— B.J. Palmer
The Heart of Chiropractic: Specificity
Specificity is foundational to the chiropractic profession. With over 200 named techniques, chiropractic focuses on identifying and correcting dysfunction in specific segments of the spine. The process is similar to how a dentist evaluates each tooth—precise, methodical, and purposeful.
A chiropractic analysis must be specific, not only in identifying valid and consistent indicators, but also in having a clear objective—to correct subluxation and restore neurological freedom.
General vs. Specific Results
As in many aspects of life, general procedures yield general results, while specific procedures deliver specific results. In chiropractic, this principle couldn’t be more true.
If the goal is to restore innate intelligence and enhance the body’s ability to self-heal, then both the analysis and the adjustment must be directed with intentionality and accuracy.
The Power of Static Palpation
To increase consistency in analysis, I rely on static palpation. This method helps remove variables that can introduce inconsistency, allowing for a more accurate location and listing of vertebral subluxation.
Adjustment vs. Manipulation
Let’s explore two terms often confused in chiropractic:
-
Adjustment: A small, intentional movement made to restore balance and function. It facilitates an inside-out process of restoration and adaptation.
-
Manipulation: Typically refers to skillful movement or mobilization. While effective in other disciplines, it lacks the specific intent found in chiropractic.
An adjustment goes beyond movement. It’s about using specific force, in a specific place, for a specific purpose—to help the body adapt, heal, and perform better.
Movement comes from the outside-in. Adaptation happens from the inside-out.
Why It All Matters
When chiropractic is specific, it serves its true purpose: to restore function through intentional correction of vertebral subluxation. This is not just about relief—it’s about optimizing the expression of life.
